Earth Day 2021

The global theme for Earth Day 2021, Restore the Earth, brings hope that people will come together to heal the planet. Selbyville Community Club was part of the Great Global Cleanup. On Thursday, April 22 at 1:00 we met on the beach in Fenwick with our trash bags, gloves and “grabbers” and searched for trash. It was windy and cold, but the troopers in the pictures had a lot of fun, friendship and laughs as we watched Deb's dog, Rosie, frolick! Pictured are Linda Daly, Deb Hiob, Geri Cooke, Joanna Herrmann, Bea Aydelotte and Rosie.

Recycling something that you’re not sure is recyclable is “wishcycling.” Recycling some items can harm recycling, putting recycling workers at risk and raising recycling costs. In order to keep our recycling system healthy, it’s just as important to leave stuff out of the recycling as it is important to put in the good recyclables. Take a tour of Delaware Recycling by clicking here.

Think of recycling as a business that takes a certain selection of materials and turns them into new items. Truly recyclable items can be made into insulation, linings, rugs, decks, and other items.

DNREC has launched a new program called Recyclopedia which helps the public and businesses determine the quickest and easiest ways to recycle materials that would otherwise go to a landfill. The web-based application offers an easy-to-navigate, pictorial guide for more than 200 commonly used recyclables and where those can be recycled depending on the user’s ZIP code. Whether by computer, tablet, phone or other device, Delawareans and businesses can choose or search for an item and quickly find where it should be recycled. The site also shows the everyday items that can be safely recycled in your trash.

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) manages Delaware’s solid waste material. Did you know that properly disposing of trash and waste material helps protect groundwater and our environment. DSWA also provides opportunities for disposal of special wastes including household hazardous waste, electronics, batteries, and used motor oil and filters. These special collection dates and sites are listed here: 2021 DSWA Collection Event Schedule.

Here's a link to DSWA's webpage to see news and updates on the collection schedule. You can also find out what solid waste items are accepted at Delaware's 3 landfills.
