GFWC Delaware State Federation of Women's Clubs 2021 Convention, "Seasons of Change" was held on May 12.
Selbyville Community Club members enjoyed a lovely day of learning about other clubs in the state, meeting new people, watching club member and state president, Rita Hollada's installation , and having fun with raffles, golf ball drops and entertainment provided by vocalist Angela Alper. The busy agenda included Posting of the colors by the Caesar Rodney High ROTC Color Guard, a beautiful singing of the National Guard by SCC member, Kitty Ambers, and greetings from the Mayor of Dover. Hosted by the Kent County clubs, the convention introduced GFWC President-Elect, Deb Strahanoski to the Delaware representatives. We also heard from Sandra Roberts, the GFWC Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) President, with both Presidents inviting us to their up-coming conventions. The DSFWC VicePresident's reviewed the accomplishments of their counties and the minutes and treasurer's reports concluded the morning's business.
A lovely memorial ceremony, "A Time of Remembrance" was held to honor the fifty-two (52) Delaware State members who passed away since the last convention in 2019. The names of Selbyville Community Club's departed members, Dorothy Kauffman, Dee Leizear, Ka thryn Tingle, Dottie Rorabaugh, Geraldine Stevens, Lorraine Weiland and Connie Parker were read and SCC was given a bouquet of carnations, one flower honoring each departed club member.
The next session honored DSFWC past President, Carla Pyle, followed by the Installation of the 2020-2022 Executive Committee which had been postphoned because of Covid.
The afternoon session's included Scholarship and HOBY presentations. These were followed by Special Recognitions from Rita and Jan Conant, Dean of Programs. SCC was recognized for its Get Out the Vote project! The prestigious GFWC Jennie Award was given to Carla Pyle for her life-long work supporting GFWC and other organizations. The convention accepted nominations for the 2022-2024 elections. The session was closed with drawings for 50/50 boards and Baskets. The convention was closed with the COLLECT and the group singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth."
The evening began with a golf ball drop and concluded with entertainment by Angela Alper, It was a lovely day and we all enjoyed ourselves! Below are some pictures from the day.

On April 29th, a group of Selbyville Community Club members attended the GFWC DSFWC’s 2020 Community Service Program (CSP) Award’s Ceremony at the Ross Mansion in Seaford, DE. Meeting with other clubs from the region, the group sang along to Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.” Then, club member and State President, Rita Hollada, gave a lovely preface to the ceremony.
Once again, Selbyville Community Club’s Arts and Culture Community Service Program won 1st Place in the GFWC Delaware State Federation of Women’s Club Annual Awards. Congratulations to the Arts & Culture Committee: Jackie Bates, Jackie Berger, Ellen Cooke, Geri Cooke, Dawn LeKites, Priscilla Morin, Jo Moskal, Karen Nowell, Sara Roman, Diane Schmidt, Susan Steel, and Shirley Wiley. Some of the judge’s comments included “The Art Show is a tremendous effort.” “Great press coverage.” “Many local businesses were partners.” “Excellent progress in a difficult year!” “Your timeless efforts to emphasize the importance of art in the community are to be applauded.” and “Working in conjunction with the schools and incorporating the library as your venue are well planned to encourage community involvement and appreciation for the arts.” We all know that the committee works tirelessly to make Youth Art Month a significant event in Selbyville. Congratulations to everyone who helped to make this committee successful!
SCC won the Creativity Award in the Environment CSP for the clever new holiday decorations made from recyclables that Deb made for the Town Park.
We received and Honorable Mention in the Legislation and Public Policy CSP for our involvement with GFWC’s Legislative Action Committee. GFWC has developed the Legislative Action Center (LAC), a great way for members to connect to Delaware’s Senators and Representative with just a click. Rita Hollada won 1st Place in the Writing Contest’s Short Story Category for her story, “Rescue.”
Joanna Herrmann won 2nd place in the Writing Contest’s Poetry Category for her poem, “Tibetan Prayer Flags.”
